Nigerian film producers now have the opportunity to showcase their works in India, home to Bollywood, the largest film industry. And this is targeting the third edition of international of the Woodpecker Film Festival (WFF) billed to hold in New Delhi between September 17 and September 20.

Organisers say intended participants have until July 20 to submit their entries via Woodpeckerfilmfestival.in.

According to Onyeka Nwelue, who was appointed a jury member of WFF earlier this year, ’10 Nigerian films will be selected for screening during the festival.

Nwelue made this disclosure on his Facebook page after his meeting with the Indian Ambassador, Ajjampur Ghanashyam.

According to Nwelue, who is also an Assistant Professor of African Studies at Manipur University, Imphal, and the author of a book, Hip hop is only for Children, the discussion revolved ‘around selecting great films showcasing life and culture in Nigeria. What do Indians in India know about Nigeria? How will they see Nigeria from the eyes of the cameras? What impact would these selected films make on Indians?

We are promising a showcase of the finest films from Nigeria to be shown to Indians!’

The first edition of WFF, which showcased visual creativity in India through films and documentaries, was organised in 2013 at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.

Last year, Bollywood, the Indian film industry celebrated 100 years and the first Indian Film Festival in Nigeria.

A major attraction of WFF would be seminars, conferences, workshops and master classes to help filmmakers and film enthusiasts explore contemporary issues, network with professional associates, hone their filmmaking skills and share the power of storytelling through cinema.

The festival and forum is part of the ‘Cinema for Change’ initiative of CMSR Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in New Delhi.
